The Incomparable Luther Vandross

The Incomparable Luther Vandross

So if you know me, you know that my favorite performer of all time is Luther Vandross.
Recently while watching his movie about his life story, it seemed like it was the soundtrack of my life. I went back to being 13 and hearing him for the first time on the radio and thinking who is this? With this incredible voice. From that moment on I was a fan.
Anytime I listen to him I would relive my first love and how we would lie by the lake, listening to him on the radio for hours just talking and being present in that moment.

I never realized that it would be many years later that he would cross over into the mainstream. His music was first only played on black stations, for years. I never knew that because growing up I only listened to WBLS in New York, which was a black station, so I thought everyone knew about him.

I followed his career from the beginning. He was from Harlem like my mother, he actually lived near where my mom grew up. But it was more than that, there was something about him, this caringness, compassion, and a kindness that came through every time he was on television or being interviewed. I first went to see him in Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. Seeing him live was breathtaking, and the show he put on, I will never forget. There would be many more live performances that I would see over the years as I was one of his biggest fans.

I didn't know he was a background singer, writer, and producer for so many talented people before he started his own career. David Bowie, Bette Midler, Gladys Knight, and so many others that he work with. And yet with all these accomplishments, for years all the media could talk about was his weight and his sexual preference.

I always thought he was gay but that didn't matter to me. Many actors and singers were gay but back then you just didn't come out. It was another time so many hid it their whole lives.
To me his sexual preference had nothing to do with his heavenly voice.

So today my friends, if you haven't seen his documentary, I recommend it. Especially if you're a super fan like me. Never too much has been my ringtone since we got ringtones, that's what kind of I fan I am. I know that there will never be another voice like his and I will be forever grateful that his songs are the soundtracks of my life.
