Alice darling, the issues of abuse
Recently, while on a flight, I watched this movie called Alice darling. It is about a strong, smart, beautiful woman who is in an abusive relationship.
Being in an abusive marriage, I could definitely relate to this movie. I knew how a person could change for the man they loved. Even so much so that they have pushed their friends away.
That you would even have to lie to your man just to spend time with your friends.
Why do we do this? For many women, it's because we know that our friends can see more than we let on to.
We have to lie to them about who we are with and pretend that they are good men. We make excuses for these men and their behavior.
But your closest friends know you and know that you have become a different person to please this man.
I can tell you that this happens to many women, from all walks of life. This happens to educated women, women who have good careers, and who even come from wealthy families.
Abusive has no boundaries. These people seek out others who have just the tiniest bit of insecurities and use that to their advantage.
Alice says something in this movie that really hit home for me, and I know probably will for others as well.
"It's like he can read my thoughts. I never know what's going to make him angry, so I keep trying, but it's never enough. "
This is how many of us feel in abusive relationships. We keep trying to make that other person happy when, in reality, it's not about you and what you do. You can do everything perfectly and it will still not be enough. I've learned that this sometimes has to do with your childhood. Some trauma is unresolved in you. I also know that you can change if you choose to look deep inside.
So today, my friends, remember you need to figure out what's broken inside of you and why you keep picking these types of men and allowing them to treat you like this. Yes, this is their issue, but you are allowing it, making it your issue as well. It is only when you unpack your issues and deal with them that you will be the change you want to see.
