Homeless in Miami Takes A Whole New Turn

Homeless in Miami takes a whole new turn

A new law taking effect on Tuesday in Miami will impact thousands of people struggling with homelessness across Florida. House Bill 1365 prohibits camping on streets, sidewalks, and in parks.

There are almost 2,800 people living in emergency shelters and another 1,000 living in the streets of Miami-Dade County, according to official figures. The new law has placed needed urgency in finding real solutions for the homelessness problem.

"To keep someone in jail, I just read that the chief judge estimates it costs taxpayers over $224 a night for someone to sit in our Broward County jail," said Jacob Torner, the vice president of TaskForce for Ending Homelessness.
Torner says taking them off the street is much cheaper, between $38-50 a night.

Homeless crisis bans public sleeping night or day for homeless people.
But arresting them is not the answer; there are 612 shelters and 8,000 people on the streets. We need a solution, not a temporary fix. So you put them in jail for 2 or 3 days, and when they get out, where do they go? Back to the streets, duh!

So it costs the government 244.00 a day for them to be in jail, not including all the costs of administrative paperwork and seriously, don't our police officers have better things to do like catch killers, con artists and drug dealers that are running rampant around our city? Hello! This is Miami, police have better things to do. But really, let's take our little resources and let's jail homeless people.

How about let's try to lower housing so people have a place to live. How about not allowing the big corporations to buy up and throw out lower income families without having a plan for them to go somewhere else. How about making billionaires pay more taxes and stop killing the little guys. How about some change in pay and the cost of living.

What about cutting politicians' salaries and putting more money into housing and drug programs. Yeah, like that would ever happen. Ha! And for the haters out there saying they are drug addicts and they will never change. Well, here you go, you're looking at a changed drug addict and I have plenty of others who I know who have changed as well.

How about, did you know that as many as 40%-60% of people experiencing homelessness have a job, but housing is unaffordable because wages have not kept up with rising rents.
How about single women with children? Do you know they represented 21% of the total homeless population – and nearly half were African Americans (49%). Of the 184,661 homeless people accounted for, 109,719 (i.e., 59%) were children.

So today my friends I ask you where are they going to go? What is "Deathsantisis" going to do about that besides putting them in jail? We need a solution. We need a change, and we all need to speak out about the injustices that are going on all around us.
Let us not forget…there before the grace of God goes I…
This can be any one of us at any time. And as I always say at the end of every blog, only we can be the change you want to see.
