Billy Joel And So It Goes
Billy Joel And So It Goes
Recently I watched the documentary
A portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel.
This two-part documentary explores the love, loss, and struggles that fuel his songwriting and his life.
Now I have always loved Billy Joel, he came from Hicksville Long Island as did my whole family. I was there every summer and school break after my dad died. So I know the feeling of growing up in that small town.
He knew from the beginning what he wanted to do. He had something to say and by God he was going to say it, his way. He wrote songs based on his life. I get that as I wrote stories, poems and this blog based on my life. When you do that, you connect to people. They feel your pain, your suffering or whatever it is that you are saying. They get you and this is why he was so relatable.
He was a working class kid, growing up in middle America, singing about his struggles. We got it, we got him. The industry wanted to pigeon hole him into some cookie cutter singer but he was not having any of it. From what he said in his songs he wrote to the band members that he took along with him from Hicksville. He was true to who he was and who was around him.
Struggling with the effects of fame and the things he was going through like the people in his life that were screwing him over (Watch the documentary to understand) he turned to drugs and alcohol. That fame often comes with a price and his family suffered from that. He hit rock bottom almost broke and out of control.
But like one of his songs, he eventually turned his life around again. He pulled himself back on top, made his lost money back and found peace and happiness with a new family this late in his career. His story gives us hope, to hit rock bottom and come back. To lose it all and remake yourself. To lose yourself and then know where you're going all without ever forgetting where you came from.
So today my friends remember he is no different from many of us. His is a story of survival and of grit. To always know who you are, where you came from and having gratitude along the way. We can all learn these lessons. Thank you Billy for all the years of your troubles as they became the soundtrack of our lives.
