What Are We Celebrating This Holiday Season?
What Are We Celebrating This Holiday Season?
I can't help but think what are we really celebrating this holiday season? Are we celebrating all the rights that our own government took away from us? Are we celebrating the kidnapping of people off the streets or at their jobs while their children watch in horror? Are we celebrating no due process or even a call to a lawyer?
Are we celebrating the cuts in funding for the elderly or veterans or people with disabilities?
Maybe we are celebrating the fact that all Americans' health insurance went up triple and people who are sick won't get the health care they desperately need.
Or maybe the fact the food has almost doubled in price and this holiday, people won't be able to afford a holiday meal.
Are we celebrating that our government told us our kids don't need toys or grandma doesn't need a new pair of slippers?
Please tell me because we are sure as hell not celebrating Christ's birth or what he later stood for. As his family ran to escape percussion as brown people in order to give him life, we certainly are not celebrating either of these things. Or what he came to stand for…love for all your neighbors, not just the ones that look like you. What about helping the immigrant or the starving or the sick. We definitely are not celebrating that.
Can you really say that you're Christian and be okay with what's going on in this world? Then you're not a true Christian because a true Christian believes in Jesus' word. They follow his word. Not part of it or some of it or the parts in your 19.99 Trump bible but all of it.
I know I can celebrate his birth by opening up my house to anyone who doesn't have a place to go or food to eat. I will do as Jesus said and welcome all colors, all nationalities, all religions, and all people's sexual preferences into my home.
I will love my neighbors as he taught me. I will not give this just lip service on the day that he was born. I will truly be who Jesus told me to be. I will fight for others that have no voice. Because as a white woman I have privilege this is how I will be celebrating our king's birth.
So today my friends, I asked you, what are you celebrating this holiday season? Are you just giving this holiday a lip service? Because if you're okay with what's going on in our country right now then you're missing the point, then you're not celebrating this holiday, you are not celebrating Jesus' birth.
