Tony Robbins and #MeToo movement

Last week my cousin posted a video of Tony Robbins at his latest convention talking about the #MeToo movement.
Her quote to me was "So what do you got to say about your boy now"

She knows that I am one of Tony Robbins biggest fans and she wanted to know my opinion about this whole situation, because not only am I his biggest fan but also an advocate for rape and sexual abuse.

So here is my response on both sides of this subject and in case you've been living under a rock, this is what conspired this last week.

In the video,Tony Robbins  argued with a woman at his  workshop who stood and questioned his views of the #MeToo movement. In an exercise, he had her hold out her fist and pushed her across the room, to demonstrate, he said, that pushing back wouldn't make her safer. Robbins referred to the Bible quote "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone," saying that we've all done things we wish we hadn't. Then he said the #MeToo movement made him "sad for women," because many Hollywood executives he coaches are now refusing to hire attractive women believing the risk is too great.

And everyone was up in arms about what he said and rightfully so, as it didn't seem like he had a grasped on the #MeToo movement at all.
Later this week he made an apology saying.

“I encouraged people to grow into the men and women they dream to be,” but that he still had much to learn.

“I teach that ‘life happens for you, not to you’ and what I’ve realized is that while I’ve dedicated my life to working with victims of abuse all over the world, I need to get connected to the brave women of #MeToo,” Robbins wrote.

Now here's my two cents for all it's worth,Tony Robbins has been self-help guru for more than four decades.
He teaches people how not to be a victim, how not to let anything in your past keep you from anything in your future. That it doesn't matter what kind of background you came from or what took place in your life, you can overcome it.

That is what he's all about, he himself also came from an abusive background with a bipolar mother, who drank and used to beat him and tell him he was nothing. He knows abusive,  so I don't think that he was putting down #MeToo movement per say, but he was just saying we all need to not look as ourselves as victims.

Now on the other side of the coin, I don't think that #MeToo movement has anything to do with victimhood, I think it has to do with being able to have a voice. It has to do with being able to show other people, especially women,  they are not alone in this situation.

I think it has to do with empowerment and nothing to do with being a victim, it's about that we all have a voice and we need to use it .

I think we've all said things that have gotten misconstrued or had came out the wrong way, and I by no means think that he's a woman basher or is not sympathetic to women. I have been to many of his conferences and events, he encourages and empowers people every day.

Maybe he just didn't understand what we  (Myself and #MeToo movement) are trying to say.

This is the struggle we face daily and this is one of the main reasons I agree to do this documentary on sexual abuse and rape called "This is series" because I think that this has been for so long, unspoken. It's a tabu subject that happens to so many women and men, as I learned making this documentary.

We don't talk about it enough, it's off limits even still in this day and age and it needs to be spoken about, it needs a voice.
I think the #MeToo movement is that voice and projects like the one I'm on, will be able to show people out there that it's okay to have a voice, to speak your truth. It's not about being the victim but about being the survivor. To show others how to survive when you go through this and to show the steps you need to take to get there.

Tony Robbins in all of his seminars teaches you the steps how to let go of your past, how to forgive and move on. He teaches how to not be a victim but to be a survivor.

So to my cousin who I love dearly, I am on both sides of the fence here. I still believe in Tony Robbins and all he stands for but I am also a huge advocate of #MeToo movement and I  truly think that this is a teaching moment for all of us. Teachimg us that we are too quick to judge, a teaching moment for Tony Robbins to think about what he says and how he says it.
A teaching moment to people out there who have been victims, to speak up and change your mindset and to the #MeToo movement, that we need to keep this going, the more talk, the more things will change. As I say in all of my blogs everyday...
