Hoarding Conditions
Hoarding Conditions
So if you know me or follow me you know that I have owned a professional organization and personal assistant business for the last 11 years. And I can tell you I've seen it all.
I am amazed because I have ADHD and am a little OCD as well and I am often shocked that I can do this for a living. The fact that I can do this and not get overwhelmed or freaked out is amazing, as I could never survive living in a messy home.
But we all must have compassion for other people who are going through things we know nothing about especially doing this job. I realized that hoarding many times comes from a deep-rooted problem usually stemming from a loss. Some people need to hold on to everything as they are afraid to let go and to be hurt again. These things mean more to them than the “junk” that people see, these are emotional blankets for them.
But I am always here talking about change. We can all change if you truly want to.
I am living proof of an addict who changed. I've known people who were selling themselves for drugs and who have changed their whole life around. So yes, I believe change is possible in any situation.
Change is scary, and I get that. People who have a hoarding problem are overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Like I always say, one of the first things I learned from AA is, first you must admit you have a problem.
Then you must take that step to make a change.
Get help, find a therapist, find a professional organizer, and learn to rely on family and friends who want to help you.
One of the first things I ask my clients when I go to their homes is how you want your home to feel. Is the clutter making you feel like you're drowning? Are you constantly trying to hide it or are you constantly in a state of panic because of it?
Does your home feel like your safe haven from the world? If not and you are feeling this way, there is help for you. You just have to take that first step, you just have to be willing to change.
So today my friends, you don't have to do everything at once, start small. Tackle one small area at a time. Clean out one drawer a day or if you're really overwhelmed call in a professional organizer like myself. We deal with this every day and can help you make the change you want to see.
