In and out, we are all the same

In and out, we are all the same
This whole week I am dedicating my blog to the victims of the Orlando shootings...to talk about love, kindness and tolerance.
One of my favorite movies is, In and out.
It stars Kevin Klien,
Tom Selleck, Joan Cusack and Matt Dillion
In it, it features Kevin, who is a teacher and coach from a small town and who is about to marry Joan, when one of his former students wins a Oscar and thanks him for being gay. The whole town flipps out including Kevin, who then starts to question himself.
When Tom, who is a reporter, comes to town to cover the story, comes clean to Kevin, that he too is gay. This makes Kevin realize he's living a lie and he comes out, on his wedding day, to his bride to be and the whole town.
This makes the whole town question him as a person, he loses his job as a teacher and coach, he loses his friends and the love of his students but he is free and is finally true to himself.
When Matt comes back into town, to try to help him get his job back and stands up for him to tell everyone how he helped him not only graduate but become this amazing actor.
The rest of the town starts to follow suit, realizing that he was always there for each and every one of them.
He was a great friend, an amazing teacher, a terrific coach, someone who is always willing to help out and lend a hand, that he has a big heart and is kind, they realize, all of this didn't change because he changed his sexual preference, he still is the same person.
Yes, its a comedy but its the message and the way it is delivered, it touches your heart, we are all the same, we are all just trying to be ourselves, our unique, different, amazing selves because deep down, we are all so much alike.
We all want love, we all cry, we all laugh, we all feel pain and loss, we all known happiness and joy. We all want to fit in, we all want to embrace our differences.
We all are human no matter if you gay, straight, Trans gender, black, white, Christian, Muslim...we are all human, why can't we get that? Why can't we see the good in a person, see their hearts, their soul, not their color, their religion, their beliefs, their sexual preference?
There are good and bad in all of us, none of us are perfect, none of us have no sin, none of us can cast the first stone...
Why are so many people afraid of different? Why are so many people so closed minded? Why must you look at the differences and not the things that make us the same?
Why can't we connect on a higher level? Why cant we just allow another person to truly be who they are?
I remember the day my best friend came out to me, he was scared, he told me he had to talk to me. We had known each other since we were 12, and I couldn't imagine what it could be.
Then he told me he was gay, he explained that he always knew but tried to be what everyone else wanted him to be "normal" straight, a "real man" but it was killing him to live this lie and he didn't want to do it one more day.
I was shocked, I had no idea, hell, he had girlfriends all his life.
"Does anyone else know"
I asked, he told me I was the last to know, "Why is that?" I asked being mad, really mad, that I was his best friend, shouldn't I be the first to know?
His answer stunned me
"It was you I was most worried about, you who I cared the most of what you thought, that we would lose our friendship"
I told him that he was always there for me, he was my best friend through thick and thin, nothing changed except who he decides to be with and if that made him happy, if that made him who he truly was then I was happy for him, see because real friendship, real love means you want the other person to be happy at any cost.
Your willing to put away differences, you willing to see things through their eyes, your willing to do whatever to see that person happy.
This was his life and his choice and this didn’t change who he was, who he had always been, if this made my very best friend happy then it made me happy.
We are still best friends to this day, he is an amazing man and I am truly blessed to have him in my life.
I can't imagine what I would have missed out if I was closed minded and threw away his friendship all those years ago.
So today my friends remember, just because a person is gay doesn't change who they were before, look at their heart, look at their soul, we are all the same, we all want love and someone who loves and except us for who we truly are because in and out, we are the same.
"Be the change you want to see"

"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
