Sharing my hometown
Sharing my hometown
So recently I went to New York as I had a ticket that I had to use or lose, since the pandemic hit last year.
Me and my BFF decided to go to my hometown in upstate New York as she had never been upstate.
Now for many people including people that grew up there in my hometown, they never want to go back to their hometowns. Hell, they couldn't leave fast enough to begin with.
I get it, I was one of those people, I hated the county life, I wanted to grow up in the city with the rest of my relatives. It wasn't until I left that I realized what I had there, how beautiful it was and how much I missed it.
Isn't that always the case? You never know what you have until it's gone… yup exactly.
It's not until you're showing someone who doesn't know it's background or history that all of a sudden you are prideful of your hometown. Yes, I know it's changed expeditiously since I lived there but the surroundings are the same. The mountains still stand majestically, the rivers and waterfalls, the winding roads through the tall pine trees that go on for miles, are still the same.
It is the sheer beauty of upstate that I miss, it's the country attitude of everyone knowing you and talking the time out to talk to you.
It's the fresh air, the quietness of the forests, the million stars you get to see each and every night that keeps me connected to home.
When you move to a city with traffic, rude people, no grass or trees because it's more important to have another 100 malls, you realize that this life is too hectic, you forget the important things in life, like actually having a life and not just working to pay the bills or to keep up with the Jones.
I understand that sometimes hometowns hold deep childhood hurts, mean kids, dysfunctional parents and awkward teenage years but we all must face our pasts in order to grow and change. Look, my childhood was hell (read my past blogs it will tell you all) and for many years because of that, I was walking around in a drug induced coma but I had to acknowledge that fact, I had to own my shit in order to heal.
And my hometown, good or bad, has shaped my life and is part of who I am and for this alone, I love it. It may not be perfect but hell, neither am I, so it's a perfect pair. I am and will always be a New Yorker, and I joke all the time that if we got global warming and they stopped having blizzards up there I would pack my shit and be outta Florida in a blink of an eye...bye Felicia! That is how much I love and miss my hometown.
So today my friends, my advice to you all, is look at your hometown with different eyes, look for the good, and deal with the bad. Go home and unpack your hurt suitcase, forgive, ask for forgiveness, let it go. It is then you will see your hometown in a different light and hopefully like me you'll be happy to go back and share your memories with the people you love.
