Changing racism

Changing racism

Last night while I was on a plane going to Ohio, I watched a movie called "The best of enemies" It was a true story set in the south, in the early 70's. It was about a town that was divided in racism.

This was at a time when black people were allowed in restaurants and they no longer had to sit in the back of the bus but their children couldn't go to school with the white children.
Yes, they had come along way with civil rights but they were still in the deep south where hatred ran deep.

Ann and Cp were true characters in this real life story set in this small southern town in South Carolina. Ann fought as an activist for others and when their "black" school burnt down, she fought to have their children integrated with the white children in their school.

The town divided into them vs us and a fight insued between the two sides. So a judge decided to bring in a man to settle this amongst themselves. He came in and made Ann the head of one side and Cp the head of the other. By the way what I haven't mentioned was that Cp was the head of the Klu Klux Klan, and if you haven't guessed yet, Ann was a black women.
Yes, talk about throwing a curve ball into the situation, they had to work together to get their sides to come to an agreement. This mediator even made the two sides sit together during meals, something no one wanted to do for the two weeks that this was going on.

As you could imagine this was tense to say the least but as the two groups worked together they realized they were more alike than different. Ann went on to help Cp's young mentally disabled son and he and his family were grateful for her help.
He learned that one of his own group picked for his "side" owned a local hardware store and all of his employees were black and that even his manager was black something unheard of back than. Cp learned that this man was a Vietnam veteran that serve two tours in Vietnam. The "Nigga" as Cp called his manager was this man's brother in war, who more than once saved his life.

Cp learns that the only thing that separated them was hatred and the unknown of each other.
Over the two weeks Cp comes to understand what it is like to be on the other side and that they all want the same things. They want the best for their families, they want love and respect, they want to be able to keep them safe and they want freedom to do what everyone else does, that's it.

This is a story about change, about love and compassion for another human being. If a leader of the Klu Klux Klan can change his mind about blacks, imagine what the rest of the world can do if they tried.

In the end he voted for integrating the schools and left the Ku Klux Klan. This was by no means an easy decision for him to make and they made his life miserable for a long time. He refused to give in and him and Ann remained great friends even touring the county promoting love and acceptance, until his death.

I loved this movie as I am always talking about how we all bleed red, how we are all the same, that we are all God's children. I would love to see this movie in all schools, I encourage all families to watch this movie together. As this is a true story and it is a story about change, about compassion and love even if soemone is different than you.

So today my friends, copy and paste this blog around your social media. Go out and rent the movie, watch it together with your kids, invite your neighbor that you don't talk to, ask for it to be shown in your schools, in your churches, everywhere because today, especially today we need to hear this message.
We need more love in this world and less hatred.
My hats off to Ann and Cp for changing and for being The best of enemies.
