Protesting For Our Country

Protesting For Our Country

So if you know me or follow me, you know that I am big on women's rights. I did not endure a 24-year verbally abusive marriage to not speak out against things that I believe are wrong. All of these things happened to me so that I could have a voice. This is my passion and my purpose, to speak up for those who do not have a voice.

And so with what was going on in the world today, I felt like I had to do something. Yes, I write about it constantly but I had to go out there to be part of the same community that feels the way I do. I needed to say that I tried to be a part of the solution and to be on the right side of history. I needed my voice heard with others not just in my writing but actually being there.

So on Thursday last week, I went to a rally called Mayday First. There were about 200 people who had come out on a Thursday morning during rush hour. We were standing out on a main intersection of one of the busiest streets in South Florida with our signs. We were chanting and yelling saying “We will not stand still for this. We will not be quiet. We will not just sit idly by while our freedoms are being taken away”

While I was there, I met some incredible people who also believed in our rights and were there for the fight. All different races, religions, and sexual orientations of people working together for a common cause. I met a Veteran man who fought for our country and who doesn't believe that our rights should be taken away by some crazy man in power. I've also met quite a few women there, and this wasn't their first protest and it certainly wouldn't be their last.

But the most amazing person I met while I was there was an eighty-five year old, little Jewish woman named Sandy Korn. She told me she marched with Martin Luther King in the 60’s. She marched for women's rights in the 70’s.
She even went to Beijing for the Women's World Rights Convention in 1975 with Gloria Steinem. For those that don't know who she is, you should. She paved the way for women's rights (Your rights now) throughout the 60's and 70's. She is a prominent feminist activist, journalist, and writer, and a significant figure in the women's rights movement. She is known for her work in promoting gender equality, reproductive rights, and social justice.

Sandy marched with the gay rights movement for gay marriage and again in 2020 with the Black Lives Matter protest. For almost 50 years this woman has marched and been on the front lines of keeping our freedoms.
I told her that that was incredible and that she was my hero. I said, “So what do you think of what's going on today?"
Her answer shocked me, she said “Do you know what sucks? I've been doing this for almost 50 years and I still have to do this because nothing has changed”

I thought about her answer and realized how right she was. We still have racism, now more than ever. They are still trying to take away women's rights and have taken them with the cancellation of Roe Vs Wade. We are still fighting for equal Rights for the LGBTQ community which they want to take away. We are now fighting for our country's rights and liberties. Where they can just break into your home and deport an American citizen without due process or a trial.

I then asked why she still does it at 85. She said she does it for her grandchildren so that they will be able to live in a free country with rights for whoever they decide to be or be with. Because we all should have the rights these people fought so hard to get. She said she will keep doing this until she can no longer walk and even then she will wheel to these events. She will never stop fighting for what is right.

So today my friends, I am here to say we should all learn something from Sandy and the millions of people like her that fought for our rights. We should fight for our children and our grandchildren. We should fight for those who we don't look like, and those who have no voice. It doesn't matter if it's not “your cause” because eventually it will be and then who will fight for you?
We must take a lesson from this legend and the many more who fought as hard as she did and continue to fight. We need to know that we can do it, it happened before and it can happen again. If we all come together we can change the world. All you have to do is be the change you want to see.
