The fight between your heart and head in politics 

So recently I was talking to a friend of mine. This is a friend I truly love. We have history, lots and lots of history. We dated back in middle school, yes back in the dinosaur days. Years later I was at his wedding to one of my great friends. We were all friends throughout the years, hanging out and visiting each other even when they moved away. Even after their divorce we remained friends. We speak every few months and when we get together it's like no time has passed at all, we pick up right where we left off. I can honestly tell you he is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know. 

I truly enjoy speaking to him because he makes me laugh and we get one another. We have history, we speak the same language of growing up in a small town and knowing each other for so long. Having said all that, the one thing we disagree on is politics and for the most part we have kept it out of our friendship, like I have done with many of my friends. I know who these people are, I know their hearts, I know that politics have never gotten in the way of a great friendship. You know the old saying “Never talk about politics or religion” and I have tried to keep it that way. 

I will listen to what they have to say because I truly want to know why they think like they do but I refuse to argue. I am a big believer in, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. It's been getting harder and harder because for the life of me I can't understand why you would back a man who has committed so many crimes and you still be like he's a great person and leader.

Not that I have to but let's go through the reasons why I don't like him.

1970s: Discrimination against Black renters.

1980s: Sexual misconduct allegations begin.

September 2005: Trump is caught on tape advocating “grabbing women by the pussy”

April 2016: Trump is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.

October 2016: A journalist accuses Trump of assaulting her in Mar-a-Lago.

October 2016: Stormy Daniels is paid hush money.

May 2017 - March 2019: Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

April 2018: Trump University found to be a ‘sham’

21 June 2019: E Jean Carroll accuses Trump of raping her in a department store.

18 December 2019: Trump is impeached for the first time.

November 2020 - January 2021: Trump tries to overthrow the 2020 election results.

13 January 2021: Trump is impeached again following the Capitol riot.

May 2021: Trump is asked about missing classified documents.

January – August 2022: Missing documents found at Trump’s home.

November 2022 - Spring 2023: E Jean Carroll wins her case.

13 January 2023: The Trump Organization is fined $1.6million.

June 2023: Trump charged with 37 federal counts relating to classified documents.

13 March 2024: Trump charged with trying to overturn election results in Georgia.

30 May 2024: Trump is found guilty on 34 counts of fraud.

10 January 2025: Trump gets an 'unconditional discharge'

All of this besides the 64 failed businesses and more than 30,000 proven lies in just his first four years.

Trump has also exceeded all American presidents combined in felony indictments: 91 to zero.

But yet people are out here backing him and thinking that I am crazy believing the lies that they are telling me. As if I couldn't do the research or as if any of this isn't fact. But I digress, because I love these people I have to believe that they are being blinded, like a cult and cannot see what is really going on. I have to believe that because I am so torn between loving them for who I know they are and not believing they can be for not feeding children, or women rights or the horrible things he says or does, or that our freedoms are slowly being taken away. 

So today my friends, I have no answers, if you know me you know that I try to see the good people especially the ones I love. You know that I am a friend until the end. I don't want to end life long friendships over politics so we will just agree to disagree and one day soon we will see who will come out on the right side of history. So if you want to know why I do what I do, it is first and foremost for my daughters. It is also for other women's rights, for the rights of the LGBTQ community, for Blacks, for brown people, for immigrants, for anyone who doesn't have a voice. This is what I fight for, this is what I stand for. This is the side I want to be on in history.

Let's all try to be the change we want to see.
