What Would You Say To Your Younger Self?

As I was reading Tyler Perry's book Higher is Waiting, there was a chapter in which he writes a letter to his 13 year old self and how afterwards he felt lighter. 

He said instead of viewing your childhood with sadness or anger you can offer that child tenderness and hope. Turn the kaleidoscope again and find gratitude for the trails you survived and the strength and wisdom they brought you. 

So what would I say to my 15 year old self? My younger self who was suffering so? 

I would tell that angry girl that one day you will learn to forgive. You will forgive your rapist for the pain you are going through now and the pain it caused you to become an addict. I would tell you that drugs don't make the pain go away, it just masks it for a while and you'll need more and more drugs to feel better. That it is a vicious cycle that never ends well. 

I would tell you that you will survive, and you will grow from the pain. It will teach you your strength and in times of trouble you will look back on these times like a badge of honor. You will see that if you could survive your dad dying, your mother's breast cancer, your rape and abortion. If you could survive a suicide attempt, and years of drug addiction that you can survive anything. 

I would tell you that through it all you will fight. You will get knocked down again and again but you will get back up and keep fighting. That even though you may feel alone, and that you feel God has forsaken you, one day you will reconnect with your faith and that faith will change your life. Your faith will keep you going through another horrible patch of years that will come.

After years of abuse, years of hating yourself and losing so many loved ones that you will never feel so alone. I would tell you that even with all of that, you will find peace and joy, and you will learn more lessons than you thought were possible. You will grow and change and you will find that God has always been with you even when you no longer believed in him, even when you cursed his name, he still had you. 

I would tell you that you stayed too long in a loveless, abusive marriage, and that your girls saw your heartbreak even when you thought you were hiding it. That all that pain that you endured for so many years would turn into your purpose. That your pain would come to help others, showing them that if you survived, they can too. I would tell you that it's not how much you have that makes you happy but it's the little things in life that will do that. That money doesn't buy happiness or peace.

So today my friends and my younger self, I am here to tell you that if you can be grateful, even just for the little things, it will change your life. I would tell you to hold on, to trust that it will turn out alright because you are a fighter, and no matter how many times they knock you down, you will get back up. Why? Because only you can be the change you want to see.
