Protecting Our Mental Health

Protecting Our Mental Health

I dont know about you but since January my mental health has taken a turn. Every day as I open up social media and I see what this administration is doing to our country, it depressed me. It is pitting people against one another. It is making hate great again. It is taking rights away from everyone and showing that it has no compassion for the poor, the elderly, children or our veterans.

I am sad, and yes, I cry a lot about how this country is becoming. I felt hopeless and to be honest I didn't even want to be here anymore. If you know me you know I am always upbeat, I am the most positive person you will meet. I have joy and peace in my life after years of misery. So this isn't like me at all. Occasionally I will get down after all I am human and when I do I am honest about it as I want others to know that they are not alone and to show the truth. Because all these bullshit people on social media are lying about their perfect lives, but I won't sugar coat shit.

I had to step back, I had to stop looking at social media. I had to step away from some people. I had to protect my mental health. I started exercising more, eating healthier. Walking everyday to be outside and see God's glory around me to ground me. I watched only inspiring things or funny things. I started praying more and going to church more. I listened to gospel music to bring me closer to God. I also started to do my part. I wrote more about what was going on. I protested, I called and wrote to my representative and congressman. I wanted to feel like I did something, to be able to say that I was on the right side of history.

I wanted my girls to see what I stood for and how they could feel inspired and have hope as well. Slowly I started to feel better. I had to keep telling myself my worrying about all of this will not change the outcome. I had to put my trust in God. That's what works for me, but hey, do whatever works for you.
I try not to judge anyone as who I am and I know everyone will be judged one day but certainly not by one of us. I know who I am, and what I stood for so I don't worry about that. I am good, knowing what I've done. I know that I had compassion for other human beings, for loving my neighbors and helping those in need but have you?

So today my friends, I am here to tell you to protect your mental health especially in today's world. Know that you cannot take on the world's unhappiness. You can be empathetic, you can have compassion, you can stand up for others but you can't let it take you down. You need to protect your mental health because we all need to be the change we want to see.
