The suicide of Tod Tongen

ABC affiliate WPLG reported on Wednesday that beloved anchor and newsman Todd Tongen died by suicide, which his brother says may have been prompted by an undiagnosed medical condition.

This last weekend we heard the news of local reporter Todd, I remember watching him since I've been living in South Florida for the last 20 something years. He always seemed like he was so much fun, he was outgoing and a little on the crazy side. He was always such a joy to watch. So that's why it came as such a shock to me and I know so many other of us South Floridians that he had committed suicide this past weekend.

Todd was married with two children, he was a news reporter for years and he was on the top of his game. It seemed like he had it all. It just brings back memories of Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade in recent years, all celebrities that seemed to have it all yet also committed suicide.

There have been  many celebrities who have also commit suicide and the thing we don't realize is sometimes what appears on the outside is not what's going on in the inside.

I know looking at these stories and so many other stories like this, the backend as I've been there.
I know when people used to look at me and think I had the perfect family, I had it all together, that I had it all. The truth is there has been two times that I actually  tried to commit suicide. But God...I'm still here.
I know how bad it could be. I know how hopeless you can feel, how hurt and broken at times that you are and you think that this will never end. You don't want to go on one more day, because it feels that bad. I know what it's like to hit rock bottom, have everything fall on you and it's just too much. You don't have the strength to go on one more day, one more hour, one more second.

We never know what someone is going through and Robin Williams was the best example of that. He was always laughing, always smiling, always funny but he was dying inside and no one knew it.

So many of us, the strong ones, the ones that look like we have it all together, are just barely holding on sometimes but we feel like we have to be strong for others. We have to be the ones that are always happy, always inspirational and so we pretend to the world, we are what we show to the world.

Sometimes it's hard to ask for help, it's hard to admit we, the strong ones need help too. Until it's too late and we feel like this is the only way out.

So today my friends if this is you, if you feel your life is hopeless, if you are broken and hurt, if you think this is your only way out, I am living proof of how things can change if you stick around. Of how things can and will get better if you only hold on.
I am a big believer in counseling, in faith and religion, in whatever it takes to do something to change your life.
