Speaking out
Speaking out
As I wrote yesterday's blog about yet another mass shooting, I wrote about speaking out about tougher gun control.
Maybe it's because I am a writer and I am a voice for those who have none or that freedom of speech is so important to me and who I am, but either way I am passionate about speaking out.
One of the greatest things about the United States was that we had this, people came to live here from everywhere because they didn't have that. They couldn't speak their minds for risk of imprisonment or even death and so they turned to us.
I believe that we need to speak out for ourselves, for blacks, for Muslims, for Christians, for the LGBT community. We need to speak for all women, for women in other countries that must cover themselves, that cant go out without a male to escort them. Who can't make decisions about their own lifes and definitely about their own bodies, to the point of stoning and death.
I ask you, who are you if you can't speak up? Who are you if you can't speak out for someone else who is like you or even better, who is different than you?
You are no better than the people trying to repress others.
It is our birth right as US citizens to speak out against injustice, to speak out for those that have no voice, to speak out for change.
I started this blog to speak out and speak for women who where and still are in Domestic violence situations. I knew my voice would make a difference to even one person and that one person mattered to me.
We all can make a difference, look at Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, one person that said enough is enough. That said I'm not going to sit here silent anymore, while I watch injustice taking place.
I love Oprah Winfrey because I remember her taking a stand when Maury and Jerry and the rest of them went to smut TV. They all started airing crappy television shows and she took a stand and said I will not, I will do shows that help others, that inspire people. Everyone including the press crucified her and said she would be a goner. She took a stand and guess what? She won, she changed the face of television because she had the nerve to speak out and take a stand.
These days scare me, Number 45 wants to silent the press he doesn't like, everyone is up in arms when someone voices a opinion that isn't like theirs.
We are taking away people's rights left and right. Good people who came here for a better life, people who just want to love who they want, to live how they want, do what they want with their bodies. These rights are slowly being taken away.
And so I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Martin Niemöller. He spoke so elegantly about speaking out for others and you really need to listen because if you don't one day you will wake up and you may not have a voice.
"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me"
Don't let this happen....
You can do something about this, you can be that change. You can be a voice for others that no longer have one, for those who died for that right, for those who live in silent and fear.
You can be the change you want to see.....
"Be the change you want to see"
"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
