Dwayne and Gabrielle support their child

Dwayne and Gabrielle support their child

When this story broke the other day, it was everywhere and this is what Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union had to say about their daughter Zaya's decision to come out publicly about her sexuality.

'We Had to Shut Up and Listen, and learn about being the best parent we could be to her.

They went on to say that:

"Social media has been difficult. She’s in junior high, and those years are so critical and can be brutal. But for a lot of LGBTQ+ kids, it’s their only lifeline to their community. We’re trying to figure out that balance of not taking away her community but also protecting her from being inundated with negativity and ignorance.

We were both surprised, and encouraged, by how many people in our lives changed their traditional views on gender and identity"

So I know there is a lot of controversy on this subject since it came out this week on social media. I know there's both sides out there fighting that this child is too young to make this type of decision.

For the record she is 18 now and definitely at a age to know who she is and decide what type of life she wants to lead.

Look I can feel for both sides but here's my opinion, if it's worth the two dollars to get on the New York Subway. I know from having a lot of gay friends and a lot of friends in the LGBT community that they've all said to me they known since they were youngsters that they were either gay or they felt like they were put in the wrong body. This wasn't something they saw, this wasn't in news or on TV, it wasn't about something someone told them, this was just a feeling they had inside of them for as long as they can remember.

So I could understand if Zaya always felt like he was a girl, or that he should have been a girl all of his life and now with so much information out there that you could look up and say Hey, I'm not alone or Hey, this validates how I'm feeling. She feels like it's okay to be who she truly felt, all of her life.

I think that is wonderful for all the people out there that are going through this, to see others coming out and owning who they are. So then who are we to say this is right or wrong? If this is what this child wants to do I'm all for it. I'm a big believer and I've always taught my girls to dance to the beat of your own drum, no matter what beat it might be, it's your beat and you need to own it.

There's nothing worse than being put into a box and saying you can not be who God-created you to be. Oh, here comes the haters right now because I just said this about being who God created. I know I'm going to get all kinds of shit about  "You're supposed to be a Christian, and in the Bible it says it's a sin" ….yadda, yadda, yadda…..

And guess what we still live in America land of the free, at least for now…

And for me, I know that the God that I believe in, is a God of love and forgiveness and he loves all of his children. ALL not just the ones that you think he should love.

Who am I to judge? So I believe that yes, this child should have the right of expression to be able to dress as she wants to, to express themselves as they want to.

And if they always knew that this is who they truly are, who the hell are we to throw stones?

Look we all go through this in one way or another growing up. You want to express yourself in your dress, in your hair, in who we hang out with. It's how we find ourselves, how we express ourselves, our creativity. We all go through phases within the stages of your life that you change who are, who we present to the world, how you feel at that moment and again who am I or anyone else to say it isn't right? What because we don't like that, because that doesn't go with what we believe. This is not our lives, we don't get to tell other people how to live theirs. You just need to live your life and let other people live theirs.

So today my friends, get mad at me or not but I agree with Dwayne and Gabrielle for standing up and saying to the world, this is my child and I will love and support her, no matter what.

Because the bottom line is love...to love, to be compassionate,

understanding and supportive to your child and every other human being.

That's all we need to do, especially if we want to...

"Be the change you want to see"

"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
