12 million dollars does not change police brutality against Breonna Taylor

Yesterday it was announced that Breonna Taylor's family received 12 million dollars in a lawsuit against the city of Kentucky.

In case you've been under a rock, this was for the senseless killing of her in her home by police officers.

Breonna Taylor, 26, was an EMT and aspiring nurse when she was shot to death by police in her own home on March 13. In what’s been described as a “botched raid,”

When police officers busted into Taylor’s apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, and as she lay sleeping, they fired multiple rounds killing her.

Her boyfriend thought they were being burglarized since they never announced themselves and he fired at the police officers first.

Even still, months after this senseless killing, when Taylor’s name has been chanted all over the country, at every mass protest against racist police brutality, which erupted after the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, also at the hands of police, still nothing has been done to bring justice to her and her family. Besides this "pay off"

According to a lawsuit that was filed by her family, her killing was the result of a botched drug-warrant execution. The warrant was for another person, who had already been detained by the time police entered Taylor’s home and shot her 8 times, killing her. Police never found anything in her home.

And as of yet the police officers involved have not been arrested, even though the city just paid out 12 million dollars. Are you kidding? Why are they still free? I'll tell you why, it's because the system is broken.

Speaking of broken systems, also yesterday we found out that

Sgt. Brian Miller who was the police officer who did nothing while there was a mass murder going on in the Marjory Douglas schooll shootings, will now receive full back pay and seniority when he returns to his duties at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association Union said Wednesday.

Miller was one of four officers who were fired after an investigation deemed they had "neglected their duties" when they responded to the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead and 17 injured.

Yet here we are giving him his job back and his full pension for neglecting his sworn duties. This is what is wrong with the system and this is why we continue to protest, to speak out and to write about these unbelievable injustices that people must live with because of the lack of training the police departments all over this country have.

We, I speak for myself and many others when I say I do not want to defund the police department, we just want more training. We want them to have if not as much or more training then it takes to become a hairstylist. What is that? You get power and a gun and a union to back you after just 13 - 19 weeks of training, are you joking? It took me 2 years plus two tests, written and practical to get my hairstylist license?? And you are giving this kind of power to random people who you don't check who they are affiliated with, the people they follow or if they come in already racist. Does this make any kind of sense??

Now don't get your panties in an uproar. I know many wonderful, caring, good police officers. Men and women who uphold the laws and are appalled at this behavior of their fellow officers.

So what we are saying is the laws must be changed. We need more and better training, more background checks and mental health assessments. We need to know that you cannot get kicked out of one department and be "transferred" into another without as much as mental health checks. We must fully dive into a person's past and make sure they are not going to have this kind of power and have it in for another race, religion or sexual orientation.

We must change the fact that you will never be able to have your pension or be put back into a job you clearly cannot do. What is this, people? This is bullshit, plain and simple. He couldn't do his job, he allowed 17 children to die that day, he changed all of those lives and everyone around them lives forever. Sorry you don't get to keep that job, the pension or anything else. If I don't do my job I get fired, I get told to hit the curb, I am lucky if I get my last check and many of you know this to be true.

So today my friends, we need to ask why then are the rules different especially for people that have and hold that kind of power? We need to make a change for the countless victims that are being killed each and every day in this country. Does 12 million dollars bring back the daughter of this family? And if the police officers did no wrong why did they receive this but the real question is why are they, the police officers involved, still not arrested?

This is why we need reforms, because 12 million dollars does not make this go away, 12 million dollars does not bring back Breonna Taylor and does not change what is wrong with this broken system.

What we need to do is vote! Vote for change, do not sit home and not vote! Every vote counts now more than ever!! We can be the change….

"Be the change you want to see"

"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
