No King's Protest
No King's Protest
So on Saturday, I went to the No King's Protest on Fort Lauderdale Beach. I wanted my girls to come and they were going to until their dad told them that they were nuts and why would they do that. Well, he wasn't the only one that asked that question. My answer has been and continues to be because we all need to stand up for freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom to protest, and freedom of honest news without being threatened.
I am fighting for my girls and all women for the right to vote, and the right to say what you want to do with your own body. I am here fighting for the LGBTQ community and their rights to love who they want to and be who they want to be with.
I am here fighting for Black Lives Matter so that they can have equal rights and pay and not have to teach their children what to do or say in case they get pulled over so they won't be killed.
I am standing up for the Immigrants who come to our country the right way seeking a better life just like so many of our grandparents and great-grandparents did. I am here for the many friends I have from Haiti, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Cuba, and the many other places that came here to escape what was going on in their land. Who are hard-working people, that pay taxes and just want a better life.
I am fighting for the elderly so they don't have to pick between food and medicine as they are cutting their benefits. I am fighting for the social security that we all worked so hard for and paid into the system for years. This is not a Ponzi scheme this is our money. I am fighting for children and keeping free lunches and Wick so that they can eat. For some of them, this is the only hot meal they get.
I am fighting for veterans so that they can get their benefits including keeping their suicide hotline…like seriously, how low can you go, to take that away?
If you don't understand why I am doing this, and if you have to ask that question, a better question is how can you be such a heartless person? How do you call yourself a decent human being? How is any of this okay?
I stood on Saturday in 95-degree heat with hundreds of people. White, Black, Brown, Gay, Straight, Trans, Women, Men, Veterans, and the elderly some of who were in wheelchairs. To come together and say this is not okay. That we will stand united for peace, for equal rights, and for our rights and freedoms. I will get arrested if I have to. I will keep speaking out until things change. I will be on the right side of history. One day my grandchildren, if I have any, will say my grandma stood up and fought for what was right, for our rights. I want to wake up every day and look in the mirror and say I did something, that I did the right thing.
So today my friends, if you have to ask me this question me, maybe the question you should be asking yourself is why aren't you doing anything? Why is treating people so horribly okay with you? Whether or not they are legally here or not, we all get due process. We all get to be treated with respect. Why is this okay with you?
We all need to be the change we want to see.
