Repeating History
I can't help but think what's going on in this country seems so familiar. And even though I wasn't born during that time, I know a lot about this time in World War 2 because I had to study it for 3 years to convert to Judaism.
Let me tell you I've learned so much more than our history classes in school taught us. They hardly cover anything that actually happened in Germany. If you want to know about what happened then you must learn it on your own. And I beg you, you need to do this to see the similarities between what's going on now from then.
But here are some facts that are pretty telling that history could repeat itself.
The Nazi Party’s meteoric rise to power began in 1930 when it attained 107 seats in Germany’s parliament, the Reichstag. In July 1932, the Nazi Party became the largest political party in the Reichstag with 230 representatives. If Trump and his group take over Congress and the House, they will hold the power. Are you listening? Sound familiar?
Trump calls the mainstream news media “fake news.” In 1930s Germany, the Nazis called them “Lügenpresse” (press of lies). He calls out minorities and stirs up hostile emotions against adversaries, calling them “internal enemies” of the American people, needing to be fought by the National Guard, even the military — another parallel with what Trump is doing, right now!
Many today do not think that Trump can do this and that may be a dangerous position to take. Many German Jews in the 1930s, even after Hitler had come to power in 1933, believed and argued that he would not last, that he could not possibly execute the evil he announced, certainly not in such a civilized society. They, of course, were tragically wrong, and many paid for their false beliefs with their lives.
This can happen again. All the signs are clearly here for us to see. Trump is already sending people off to “camps” without trials or without letting them have attorneys. Isn't that what Hitler did when anyone opposed him?
Trump is trying to stop the media from covering what he doesn't like about him. Hitler did the same things to anyone who spoke out against him.
Hitler centered on the Jewish people saying they were the reason the country was in the state it was. Trump points the finger at the LGBTQ community, and the immigrants as the cause.
Hitler divided the country as them against us.
Trump has also divided the country now. These are all similarities that are going on right in front of our eyes and if you can't or won't see then you are blind. No, then you are stupid! Yeah, I said it. We must do something now, we must not let what happened in Germany repeat itself here in the United States.
So today my friends I will leave you with this from Elie Wiesel (Who's book “Night” you must read as he survived in the concentration camps for years.) Said In his 1986 Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech, Wiesel said:
“How naive we were, that the world did know and remained silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe”
Only if we speak up for all people, will be the change we want to see.
