The Right Teacher Will Influence Your Life

The Right Teacher Will Influence Your Life

Recently on Facebook one of my friends who I went to school with posted a list of teachers he remembered going back to kindergarten. It was a nice walk through memory lane for all of us who went to school there.

That got me thinking about my teachers and which ones I still remember, which was way back in the dinosaur days before computers and cell phones. I could only name less than a handful that touched me and that I would never forget. I remember my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Gonzalez as she was always laughing. She made teaching fun. I remember my 9th grade social studies teacher Mrs. Kemp. She would dress up as the characters that she would be teaching us about and let us act them out. I couldn't wait to get to her class and of course, I got straight A's. The following year I got Mr.Goodstall for the same class, social studies. He was an Army Sergeant and still thought he was in the army. He was a horrible teacher, actually the worst teacher I ever had and I went from a straight-A student to failing. Now tell me who's fault is that?

If you're a teacher who loves what they do and makes it fun to learn, the kids will want to learn and will do good, and this was the perfect example of that. My next favorite teacher was someone I actually couldn't stand because I had her too many times for detention, yes, I was that kid always in trouble. Her name was Mrs. Skolnick but when I got her for English I realized she was the best teacher ever. She is the one who opened up my love for writing. She opened my mind up to possibilities. She was a hard ass but was also a kind person who wanted you to learn and you could tell that she loved what she did. Again, I was an A student in her class. See the correlation here? If you have a good teacher, the student will do better.

I think teachers have one of the hardest jobs, and unfortunately get the lowest pay. Some teachers love what they do and it shows. And then there are some who are just calling it in. Whether they have been at it too long, or lost the love for it or honestly just were never any good at their jobs, either way it does not help the students.

Thank god for the good ones, because for a teacher to affect a child and for that child 30, 40, or 50 years later to remember them as their favorite, well that says a lot about that teacher.

So today my friends, especially my teacher friends and my favorite teachers, who changed my life. Thank you. Thank you for loving what you do, thank you for changing lives. Thank you for influencing our lives.
