Anxiety can strike anyone

Anxiety can strike anyone

Recently singer Summer Walker canceled her tour dates due to social anxiety. The R&B singer has pulled the plug on the majority of her “First and Last Tour” due to her extreme social anxiety. She made the announcement Tuesday in a video on Instagram.

This is not the first time this has happened to a celebrity but her coming forth and actually telling the public is a brave move for the singer. Most of the time celebrities and regular people alike are so shut mouth about mental disorders, like it will show them to be less than.

Why can't we all admit our flaws, that we are all humans who go through many things in our lifetime. Many of us have gone through depression, anxiety, even mental breakdowns, yet no one wants to talk about it, like it is some dirty little secret we are afraid to speak out loud.

It we do not speak about these things we can not help others, her speaking out opened up a dialogue among people that yes, social anxiety is real and it can happen to anyone, even famous people whose job it is to be in front of many people.

It can strike anyone, any race, any social background. These disorders can stop people in their tracks, it can and will destroy your life if you don't speak out and get the help you need.

I know in my family we had bi-polar, depression and mental illness and I am always concerned about it for me and my girls. If you follow me you know I believe in therapy, over the years I have seen many therapists. I also had my girls in counseling both individual and family because I want them to learn the skills to cope with the hard times in life because trust me, we will all have them.

Personally therapy helped me to learn to forgive my rapist, it helped me overcome my drug and alcohol addiction, and recently it's been helping me become healthy in my choices of relationships.

These trained professionals are there as a sounding board, to ask you the tough questions to get you thinking about why you do the things you do. They teach you coping skills so when things come at you, you will deal with them in a healthy way not by drowning them in drugs, alcohol, eating or any other bad habits you may have learned before that aren't good for you.

But the first step, just like in AA is to admit you have a problem. You must be brave enough to raise your hand and say I am struggling and I need help. That won't make you weak, you won't be less than, you will be human and eventually you will be healthy.

So today my friends, I want to applaud Summer's brave move to come forward and admit she is human, her bravery will go on to help a lot of other people.

And if you are suffering, if you are depressed and trust me this is a hard time of year for all of us and even more so if you are suffering, please go and get help. Reach out to your pastor, to the many free services that are out there, to someone who will help. Trust me it is nothing to be ashamed of, we are all human and sometimes we just need a little help to get by.

Become the best version of yourself, it's all up to you but first you must admit it, the rest will come. And as I say at the of every blog....

"Be the change you want to see"
