Putting your health first
If you follow me regularly you know I am at the gym everyday at 5 am. I write this blog while I'm on the treadmill hence the name Treadmill Treats. After an hour of cardio, I lift weights for 30 minutes or so.
I also watch what I eat as well, I hardly ever eat fried or fast foods. I am also doing things for my mind, like meditation and yoga,I go to counseling and go to church for my mental health as I am trying to have a mind, body and soul connection here.
What you may not know is the reason why I do all of this. I have a horrible family history of heart disease, which is on both my mother and father's side of the family. My father died from a massive heart attack at 45, all of his siblings died before 60 of heart disease. All of my cousins on my dad's side have heart issues, with two dying this year alone, before 60. My mother and her mother both died of heart failure before 76. So this has been my growing concern all these years to make sure that I keep up my health.
I always felt like this was not going to take me out, at least not without a fight. So I started my quest to health and fitness since I was in my 20's.
Recently I've had chest pains, they came and went and I didn't think much of them but the other night they came back with a vengeance. That didn't worry me as much as a sharp pain that ran down my left arm, now at this point, all kinds of things were running through my head.
As I laid there debating with myself about my health insurance or lack there of (meaning the crappie health insurance I do have and what it would cover)
I started to get a shortness of breath, probably do to the fact I was seriously freaking out here!
Yet, I still debated going to the hospital, worrying about the bill's this would incur and the lack of income I would not be bringing in.
But my fear of dying young and leaving my girls alone overridden the cost factor and made me go.
After hours in the emergency room and getting admitted into the hospital because of my family history, I waited and waited and waited.
They did multiple tests and blood work and finally came back and gave me a clean bill of health. I had a pulled muscle by my heart that presented the same symptoms as a heart attack.
To tell you I was relieved is an understatement, I almost screamed because with this kind of a family history, well you just never know.
But it made me stop and think about life and how it is so short. It could have been another way, it could have been bad, let's be real I do have a predisposed family history to worry about.
But for now I am okay, I have another chance to try to make my health number one in my life, to make sure I tell the people in my life how much I love them and to live life large because at any time, at any moment it can all change. Poof! Just like that it can change, and we don't get a say in it.
So today my friends, really think about your health, look at how you are using your bodies, are you treating them like the temple they are? Are you doing everything you can to insure that you will be here for a long time to come? But not just be here but be here in the best possible shape you can be in?
You need to put yourself first, put your health first, make sure your taking care of your body, mind and soul because we only get one shot here, only one body to take us through this life, let's make sure we protect it, so it can give us many years of service.
