Life Is Too Short To Work Yourself To Death

A few years ago I worked as a personal assistant for a couple. They were both in the mortgage field and the wife was a workaholic. I mean full out workaholic. She worked 10 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

I remember when they bought a vacation home in the mountains she would work all the way up there and back in the car and then the whole time she was there. 

Her husband, bless his heart, would try to get her to do things, too slow down but she was always chasing the next dollar, and so he just went along with her. And look I get it I am a single mom and I work for myself, so if you don't work you don't get paid. 

But even I draw the line. I don't work on the weekends, I take many vacations throughout the year and no, I don't answer my phone. 

I don't care, life is about living and enjoying yourself. The world is not going to end if I don't answer my phone or if I go away. 

But this wasn't her excuse, she had plenty of money. Both her and her husband made a great living. Her parents were wealthy and left her money and they had no kids, so she didn't need to work this hard. She chose to. 

Every time they would come back from their cabin, I would ask how was your vacation and her husband would say “What vacation, she worked the whole time” Eventually they sold the house in the mountains because it was a waste of time to drive 12 hours and work the whole way there, the whole time there and the whole way home so they might as well just stay home. 

I don't get it, look I enjoy my work but it's not my life. I have my girls and my friends. I volunteer, I have my church, I truly enjoy my weekends and my vacations. I know better than most from losing so many people that I loved, that life is truly too short. You can be here today and gone tomorrow just like that. And then what? What did you do? Work? That was your life? Is that the memories you want to take with sitting behind your desk all the time? 

Oh hell no, I am going screeching into my grave screaming what a fucking ride! Fuck work! 

I want fun! I want to enjoy as much life as I can. I want to see the world, make memories with my girls and friends. This is for some of you that cater to your bosses, news flash they dont give a shit about you. 10 minutes after you're dead they are looking for a replacement. They are only worried about how much money you are making them. 

My girlfriend every year leaves days on the table from her job. Days she earned and that they aren't going to pay her for. She says that they bitch at her when she takes days off. Too frigging bad, then dont give me so many, problem solved! What are you crazy? Fuck them! 

I am taking all my days and then some. I no longer allow clients to take advantage of me. I don't answer calls or texts after hours or on the weekends. Sorry, this is my life. 

So today my friends, I truly feel bad for my client. She worked her whole life away and worked herself into her grave, for what? More money to do what with? Obviously not enjoy. Obviously not to take with her.

I hope this gives you pause in your life. I hope it opens your eyes up that life is truly too short and it is here to enjoy. We don't know when our time will be up so we must make the most of what we have now. 

We all need to be the change we want to see.
