The new normal

The new normal

Recently because of this Coronavirus thing our new normal has been being housebound. Gone are the days when you go out to dinner, meet your friends out in restaurants or clubs or even go to the gym. Now we are all confined to our homes and this seems to be our new normal, and for how long? Well, none of us have any idea.

So this is my advice from a person who hated change, a person who feared change for so many years that I rather be stuck in a verbal abusive marriage for 24 years then leave because I was that afraid of change. Here is my advice, embrace the new normal, as hard as it may seem, it may actually have some pretty good benefits. Now you're all looking at me crossed eyed thinking, have I lost my mind? No, I've learned that change is good, no matter how hard it may seem. You see, I've always looked at things from the bright side, I have to tell you what I've seen lately.

I've seen more families together walking around the lake, playing ball and actually talking to each other than I have in years. People are taking advantage of being outside, of sitting around the lake, or walking, bike riding, actually playing with their kids. People are home interacting with their families, doing things together as it should be. This is such a huge thing for our world, because parents are too busy to be with their kids.

I'll never forget taking my girls on the Disney cruise and every kid had a band on their wrist except my girls and when I asked about it they told me they were all enrolled in the ship's day camp and I thought why? Don't these parents want to spend time with their kids? Apparently not, as it seemed like we were only a handful of parents that did. But this  quarantine makes them spend time with them without all the other shit in the way. Worrying about work, or when you will have time to do this or that, we now have all this time to really be there, to really connect.

It is making everyone slow down, it's making everyone realize what's really important. I know for me, it's been wonderful, I get to exercise with my girls everyday, we cook afterwards and sit down as a family. As we eat, we talk about world events, our lives, our feelings and even our worries and we get to do it as a family. Also this time has given me time to do things that have been on my to-do list, forever like clean out my closets, throw away stuff, deep clean the house. I had a honey do list of things to fix as long as my arm and I am finally getting it done. It's given me time to connect with God, to truly test my faith and to know that he has me and to be grateful for what I do have.

I look at this time as a time of renewing and since I always look at the bright side of everything and I always try to see the good in it, I've been looking for the lessons that I need to learn. Yes, even in the dark times I always look for the lesson because there always is one if you look hard enough. The lesson for us is to slow down, to be president in the moment, to do things we haven't had time to do. It's about spending quality time with our families, to reset our lives with what's really important.

Trust me, it's not about social media, it's not about money, your "important" job, it's not where you are or how many likes you get people! It's about connecting, it's about having decent human compassion, which we have seemed to lost. It's about being with the people that you love and who love you for you.

So today my friends, what we need to learn is what is really important,   and that's what so many people have forgotten, so maybe this virus has given us this time to step back and think, think about what's really important as we settle into the new normal.
