Calling people out

Calling people out

Recently I called out a cousin of mine for being racist. He posted a picture of a watermelon flag with the caption of:

"This should be the new BLM flag"

So I called him out on it, because to me this was disturbing and disgusting. This was blante racism, out and out in your face, I am white privilege and I don't give a shit about you or your cause, racism.

My family who believes in those ideas came at me with both guns, saying how could I call him out? What kind of family am I? We are supposed to stick together. Why? I am not a racist, I will call you out whether your family or not. I call a spade a spade, period.

I cannot sit around and let you or anyone out there think it's okay to perpetuate this kind of hate. This is why we are in the state we are in right now because not enough people are willing to stand up and say this is not right and this will not be tolerated.

The white privileged people need to be a voice for those who still do not have one, for the underdog, the underprivileged, for the people who are struggling, we need to speak for them.

They called us every name in the book, my friends and other family members who stood up to say this was not right. They went on how this was a joke. Racism is not a joke, nor has it ever been a joke for the people it affects.

It's like passive aggressive people saying it's a joke, I was only kidding. Well jokes don't hurt people, they don't cut you down and make you feel bad.

Maybe I shouldn't called him out, maybe I could have kept scrolling by pretending that the garbage he has posted was "not that bad"

But then I remember the quote from Martin Niemöller, a Holocaust surviver where he said:

"In Germany they came first for the Communists,

and I didn't speak up

because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak up

because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn't speak up

because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,

and I didn't speak up

because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me,

and by that time no one was left

to speak up for me"

I have to speak up, this is what I do, this is what I write about, this who I am. I am the voice for those who have none because I remember what it is like to lose your voice. To not have the courage to speak up, to think it's okay to be treated like garbage day after day because you don't think you can change it.

We need to be the voice before we don't have one, before one day someone decides that our voice is the one who should be quieted.

So today my friends, we must all stand up and speak out about this and the many other injustices there are in this country.

We need to call attention to those "Karen's" that are out there thinking this type of behavior is okay. It is only when we bring to light the darkness that we can confront it and change it.

We must change, we must be the change we want to see…

"Be the change you want to see"

"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
