Don't give anyone the power to trigger you
Don't give anyone the power to trigger you
My bestie posted this meme the other day, and it just hit me. It says please don't give anyone the power to bring back the triggered, unhealed version of you that you worked so hard to overcome.
That was such an Oprah light bulb moment for me. I've thought I had worked so hard to become better, to overcome what I went through. I thought I was okay. This is another AA lesson. You will always have addictions, you are only one drink, or one drug away from falling down that rabbit hole. You will never be "cured," but you learn things to be able to stay on the path to being healthy.
You have to learn you can't change others. You can only change your reactions to them and what they do.
You may be able to be with them if you get help and learn not to be triggered. Or you may decide this is too much work for me and walk away. But the choice is yours. You have the power, and if you are giving them the power, then you still have more work to do on yourself.
Please read that again, because I had to…you have the power, and if you are giving away your power, then you still have work to do.
I realized that, yes, I still have work to do, and yes, I am getting the help I need.
This is my life. This is my power, and no one deserves it. We need to stop blaming others for what they do. That is who they are, and it is obvious they don't want to change. You need to understand that whatever is broken in them, to be able to treat you badly, is their issue, not yours. You are not the Jackass whisperer. This is not yours to "fix"
So take off your Captain Save a Hoe cape and start fixing yourself.
You need to learn your part. Why does this affect you? Why are you giving them control? What is not fixed inside of you? And then you must do the work on yourself.
So today, my friends, this lesson is not just for you but for me as well. We must learn to take care of ourselves and not allow anyone to bring you back to that place of pain that you've worked so hard to overcome. Only you can be the change you want to see.
