There's No Place Like Home

There's no place like home 

So recently I came back from my yearly trip back home to upstate New York. People often ask me why I go home so much? Especially since I have traveled so much all over the country and to other countries. And even though some things have changed so drastically in the town that I grew up in, the answer is because home is home. This will always be my home. 

When I come up the highway and start to see the mountains, it automatically soothes my soul. No matter what is going on in my life, it doesn't matter, it all fades away. I am home. 

This is the place with my most treasured memories. Memories of my mom and dad. Memories of my first friends, my first bike ride, my first love and my first kiss. This is the place where I learned how to ski, learned how to ride motorcycles or shoot a gun. This was where I learned how to fish and enjoy being one with nature. 

I know every back road, all the places we hung out at.

I know generations of people who lived there and still live there as well. Every time I come home I get to hike in the woods or sit at the lake or look at a waterfall, the same ones I did while I was growing up. This is my peaceful place. It allows me to be one with nature and God. It allows me to think, to write, to be myself with the people who know me the best and the longest. 

I love to go to the city to see a Broadway show or think of all the memories of my dad taking me to see The Rocketees for the Christmas and Easter show at Radio City Music Hall every year. 

Or bargaining for a fake Louie bag in Chinatown or walking the same streets in Little Italy and eating the same things that my great grandparents did, when they grew up here.

And I can remember all the summer weekends at the Hamptons or Coney Island.

I am a New Yorker and always will be.

I miss home, no matter how long I live in Florida, upstate New York will always be home to me. I say it all the time but if we got total global warming and New York didn't have winters anymore I would be the first to pack my shit and move back there. The only thing keeping me from that is the cold. 

So today my friends I hope this answers your question that I get asked so many times of why do you come back so often? I have to tell you the answer that Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz…There's no place like home, there's no place like home.
