My New Year's commitment to God
My New Year's commitment to God
Yesterday was the start of our annual Daniel fast in which we eat only fruits, vegetables and water for 7 days. For as long as I've been at my church, The Faith Center I have done this fast. We start it the Sunday after New Year's and it lasts for 7 days. In these 7 days we do not watch TV, we do not go on social media, we do not listen to secular music and we also attend church every night.
We do this because this is our gift to God for all he's done in our lives. We give him this first week of the year for his goodness, grace and mercy he has given to us this past year and for the upcoming year.
My reasons are the same but I also need to start off this year hearing his voice....I need to hear him. With so many things that have our attention, pulling us in this direction or that direction sometimes it is hard for us to concentrate on just him and to hear what he is trying to tell us.
I know some of you may be thinking how crazy this sounds, why so many restrictions? This is not mandatory, this is an individual gift we chose to participate in. If your not feeling it and chose not to do it, you will not be shamed or thrown out of church or banished to the back row in church. This is between you and God, this is your gift if you chose to give it. For me it is not a big deal for all that he's done in my life and continues to do for me.
I need to do this just like I need to Volunteer in my church because I need to give back for all they've done for me.
If it wasn't for God and my church I honestly don't think I would be here or if I was, definitely not in my right mind. And besides it is such a big sacrifice? The Catholics have Lent, the Jewish people have Yom Kippur, every religion has some kind of day or event that they give back to their higher power, this is just the way we chose to do ours.
To me, I need to start my year on the right foot, cleaning out my body and my mind, focusing on what is truly important in my life. To me it's not such a sacrifice, especially when I think about the sacrifice that Jesus made for me.
During this time we pray about the upcoming year, we give thanks for the previous year and we show our gratitude for all he's done and will continues to do in our lives.
The reason for fasting is that God will take you out of your norm, to cleanse your mind so that you can hear him. See I need this, I haven't been to church for the last week, especially with all the craziness of the holidays so I need this like an alcoholic needs AA meetings.
This is something that grounds me, it fills my soul, it keeps me going, I need to be here. I am all for whatever gets people through their day and if it works for you, that's great, keep doing it, but this works for me.
I look forward to this fast, after all the holidays, all the eating, all the stress, all the parties, I need to cleanse myself, I need to ground myself with what is most important in my life.
This is what works for me, you have to find your own path, I can tell you what got me through but in the end you must find your own way.
We must all walk our own journey, we must all make our own decisions and decide what and to who we must answer to.
I refuse to tell anyone what they can or cannot do, what they must believe in, who am I? I am just a lost soul looking for help, who am I to judge? I have made plenty of mistakes and probably will make plenty more.
I am just trying to do better, be a better person, just trying to live a better life. So this is what I chose to do, I want to start off this amazing new year with a fresh start, a clean heart and body. This is my gift to God after all of his gifts he has given me.
I need to hear his voice, I need guidance in my life, I need to listen because when I don't things go awry. I made terrible choices on my own, especially when it comes to men, oh Lord I need a lot of help in that area, so this is why I do this, this is why I come here week after week.
I come to this incredible place, filled with these amazing people who saved my life and continue to encourage me. They make me laugh, they are there with a shoulder to cry on, a prayer when needed and they are a family to me. This is why I keep coming, this is what gets me through.
So today my friends remember do whatever gets you through, do what you feel in your heart, but do something. This is a new year, a new beginning, a time of change…
See anything is possible if you believe.
I will not be on social media for the next week except for posting my blog which will be about God
(So those of you who don't like all my "God talk" take the next week off of reading it, I understand)
I need to keep my eyes on the prize, to sacrifice in order to give back and get God's blessings.
"Be the change you want to see"
"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
