The shock of losing Kobe Bryant
The shock of losing Kobe Bryant
I think that we are all shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Kobe Bryant, his 13 year old daughter Gigi and the nine others on the horrible helicopter crash this weekend. Kobe with just 41 years old and in the prime of his life, so who would have thought that such a tragic accident would befall on one of our greatest athletes of all time.
I know as I read about this how deeply I was affected even though I wasn't much of a basketball fan but the reason it affected me so deeply was the fact that he was so young and that his wife had just lost her husband and her daughter.
It affected me because I couldn't imagine as a parent being in that situation, knowing that this helicopter is going down and I can't do anything to protect my child. I think this is a big reason this has affected all of us so much. Because it brings to the forefront how life is so fragile and that at any time it could be over.
It teaches us that we need to be more loving, we need to tell the people in our lives how much we love them, how much we respect them and how proud of them we are.
I hope it teaches us that we need to be present in each and every moment because we never know when your moment will be over.
I know in my lifetime I've had a lot of loss, more than any one person should ever have to suffer and the one thing I learned from losing so many people is that life is short. I've learned to enjoy every moment we are given here on this Earth, to be fully present In the moment.
Pay attention, put down your phones, talk to your kids spend time with them. Call the people that you love, the people that you haven't heard from because the worst regret in life is wishing you could have told someone you love them and you didn't and now it's too late.
Make up with the people you are fighting with, I will tell you first hand the guilt you will have if you don't. The worst regret is wishing you forgave them, wishing you would have one last chance to tell them that. Don't keep saying that I'll talk to them soon or I'll see them soon and then never being able to get that chance again.
See death only effects and hurts the people left behind and maybe it's because I believe in God and I believe in heaven that I know the people that have passed are called home, to a wonderful and beautiful place and it is only us that are still left here on Earth that grieve for that loss. I know for myself I'm not afraid to die, I'm just afraid of how it will affect my children when I die. I know we all think we have so much time here, we think that people are invincible but if you ever lost a parent or child, you know the feeling of devastation, the feeling of having your heart ripped out of your chest and never being the same again.
So that is why I can imagine what his wife and other children are going through right now and I pray for them
So today my friends, my message to you is make up with somebody that you've been fighting with, tell your children that you love them and that you're proud of them. Tell your friends how much they mean to you in your life. Be present in every moment and like I always tell you live your life large because you'll never know, today may be your last day.
Rest in peace Kobe, Gigi and the other nine people whose lives were taken too soon. May God give your family the strength and peace to get through this.
