National coming out day 

So Sunday was National Coming Out Day and if you follow me you know I hate days like these. Why do we have to be reminded of being good to our grandparents or having dinner with our families, shouldn't that be a given? But this day for me is different, on this day I hope it gives people the courage to come out, people who might have not done it before. Maybe with social media, they will also see others who are brave enough to come out and they will join them.

It is a horrible thing to pretend to be someone you are not. I know because for 24 years I pretended to be a "perfect happy family" when we were a  dysfunctional mess. It was so hard to get up every morning and put this persona on. So I can't imagine having to lie to all of your family and friends for years or maybe all of your life because you are afraid of losing them.

I remember when I was growing up my best friend came out. He was 19 or 20 at the time. Everyone knew before me and when he finally told me I was mad, not that he came out but that I was the last to know and I was his best friend. He said he was the most worried about my reaction and it took him a long time to tell me.

I looked at him and said:

"The only thing different about you now, then 5 minutes ago is who you chose to sleep with, you are the same person that I love and will always love"

Unfortunately, that is not always how it goes for many gay and LGBT persons. Many are disowned, thrown out of their homes, and made to feel horrible about the way they were born. Yes, you are born this way. I know so many people that have said they knew when they were 3 or 4, that they knew their whole lives. And yet they have to hide who they truly are because other people are so closed-minded. Please don't come at me with the whole "Christian" thing either, because we are not God, we don't get to judge, only he does. We are only taught to love one another, in fact, it tells us that in the Bible over and over. 

Who am I to judge anyone? I've done enough fucked up shit in my life. I can only hope I can be forgiven, I can't be worried about others. That is on them and God, I can just love them, accept them, and have compassion for what they must be going through. There are enough horrible things going on in this world, why add to it who someone loves or sleeps with. Please….who gives a shit! The heart wants what it wants, it doesn't see color, religion, or sex, it feels only connection, love, and caring. Which is how we should all feel when it comes to another human being. Why must it be about sexual orientation or religion or color when we all bleed red, when we die we all turn to dust, so then why does it matter?

So today my friends, to all of you out there that were brave enough to come out before, thank you for paving the way for others, for being a role model, and for not giving a fuck what others think of you and who you love. And to the many others that are still in the closet, still struggling about coming out, know that there are many people out there who will love you for who you are. We love and support you, and so do you boo! Live your authentic life today! 

Life is too short to pretend to be something other than your not, do you, be you...you are not alone.
