We must speak out against these senseless killings

We must speak out against these senseless killings

I have no words for what is going on in this world lately. So many senseless killings, so much hatred and so many people taking sides, it makes me sad.

But then something like this happens and I get mad. We should all get mad at what has happened.

This weekend Minnesota police said 46-year-old George Floyd, who had worked providing security at a restaurant, died after a "medical incident" in a "police interaction".

Pretty words for a cold blooded killing by police officers

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the four officers were now "former employees".

By now we all have seen the footage shows the man, George Floyd, groaning and repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" to the white officer.

By the way, my cousin knew him, he worked for a friend of hers and he even rented a home from his boss. They called him a gentle giant, a quiet man who had moved to Minnesota to make a better life for himself. Now dead because of a senseless act of terrorism by police officers.

Yes, terrorism, I said it, because that is what is going on in our neighborhoods all across this country, police just killing black men and women senselessly.

This incident echoed that of Eric Garner, a black man who died being arrested  "I can't breathe" became a national rallying cry against police brutality in the US after the July 2014 death of Eric Garner.

Garner, an unarmed black man, uttered the phrase 11 times after being detained by police on suspicion of illegally selling loose cigarettes. They were the final words of the 43-year-old, who died after a police officer placed him in a chokehold.

Then there was Oscar Grant, He was another victim in a long string of unarmed black men to be killed by police. The night he died, Oscar, 22, was out celebrating New Year’s Eve.  At around 2 a.m., he and friends were pulled off of the Bay Area Rapid Transit train by police officers. He was unarmed and cooperative, even telling friends to calmly oblige the police. That did nothing to save Oscar Grant.  Within minutes, without cause, a police officer would shoot him in the back, execution-style.

What about Breonna Taylor, an EMT worker shot dead in her own home!! In her own home after she and her boyfriend thought they were being burglarized and he fired at the officers in self-defense. Three officers "blindly firing" more than 20 shots into the apartment killing her dead.

Let us not forget about the racist people out there who are now taking the law into their own hands as in the case of the shooting of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery in February. That was captured on videotape and posted on social media, stirring outrage over the reluctance of prosecutors to file charges against Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis for the crimes.

Just so you know what is going on in this world today, let me make this clear for you. This is from the website, mapping police violence, they track all police related crimes and these are the scary facts:

*Police killed at least 104 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week.

*Nearly 1 in 3 black people killed by police in 2015 were identified as unarmed, though the actual number is likely higher due to underreporting

*36% of unarmed people killed by police were black in 2015 despite black people being only 13% of the U.S. population

*Unarmed black people were killed at 5x the rate of unarmed whites in 2015

*Only 13 of the 104 cases in 2015 where an unarmed black person was killed by police resulted in officer(s) being charged with a crime. 4 of these cases have ended in a mistrial or charges against the officer(s) being dropped and 4 cases are still awaiting trial or have a trial underway.

*Only 4 cases (Matthew Ajibade, Eric Harris, Paterson Brown Jr., and William Chapman) have resulted in convictions of officers involved, with a fifth case (Walter Scott) resulting in the officer pleading guilty.

*Of the 4 cases where the officer(s) involved have been convicted and sentenced, none were sentenced to serve more than 4 years in prison.

*Only 1 of 2 officers convicted for their involvement in Matthew Ajibade's death received jail time. He was sentenced to 1 year in jail and allowed to serve this time exclusively on weekends.

*The officer who killed Paterson Brown was sentenced to only 3 months in jail. Deputy Bates, who killed Eric Harris, was sentenced to 4 years in prison and Officer Cobb, who killed William Chapman, was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Officer Slager, who killed Walter Scott and pleaded guilty, has yet to be sentenced.

Yes, these unbelievable facts are true, if you're a police officer, you can kill an unarmed black man in the United States and literally serve no prison time.

Now if that doesn't make your blood boil then there is something wrong with you.

These are someone's family, their sons, someone's father, brothers or friends that are being shot dead at an alarming rate and you better trust and believe if these were white men, they would be getting the death penalty.

We need to protest, to come together and say this is not right and this must stop now! If you can't see that it is a crime, a sin to not be able to walk down the street and not worry about you being shot dead just for the color of your skin, well then you are the problem. We have not overcome anything that Martin Luther King fought for, because instead of lynchings, we are now freely and legally killing black people.

We, especially us that are white need to speak out against this, now before any more tragic killings take place. It is your duty as a human being to speak up on others behalf. We cannot let one more person die in vain.
